Using the new Icom IC-9700 in D-Star DV Internal Terminal mode and connecting to the multi-protocol XLX227 B reflector. Radio is running the latest firmware as of June 29, 2019 ver 1.11
The IC-9700 is a very feature rich radio. One feature it has is the ability to make pure IP connections via the built-in ethernet port and connecting to gateways running G3 software from Icom and/or reflectors running “open software”. This is a short guide on connecting to an open reflector XLX227 B.
Connect up the ethernet port on the IC-9700 to your home network and make sure it gets an IP address. The address should be a static address since you will need to open up UDP port 40000 for port forwarding from the Internet to the IP address of the IC-9700 on you local network. The best way to do this is to login to your router/gateway box set up a static entry in the DHCP pool using the MAC address of the IC-9700, you can find that in the information location in the menu – this way when you power on the IC-9700 and it requests an IP address using DHCP from your home router it will always get the same IP address.
In the IC-9700 some things need to be setup – here is a short video on what those settings are: (Validate the network, make sure My Station is setup, set up DV Gateway)
In video I am linking to reflector XLX227 module B. This reflector is capable of linking D-Star, DMR and Fusion nodes/users all in the same room/Talk group/Module. This means you can have a Digital X-Mode QSO with the three different modes: D-star linking to /XLX227B, DMR+ to TG 4670 and YSF to 95093 – you can get the status from the dashboard of the reflector – http://xlx227.hamnet.ro/index.php Look under users/Modules for your call sign and then under Repeaters / Nodes

I would like to add some comments to this, to prevent setup failures.
– You need to have a public routable IP address. 3G/4G/LTE connections work poorly because of port forwarding failures and frequent IP changes. Initially it will work, and then fail later on.
– You need to forward port 40000 to your radio. This is not optional and will lead to not hearing anything on the reflector after some 5 minutes (more or less depending on your router’s internal settings). Pressing the PTT will restore the function, but only for another 5 minutes or so.
– The reflector disconnects you after 1 hour. This is needed since there is no reliable way to detect the other end being active. With the default 9700 setup this will coincide with the screen saver setting in. It is NOT a radio issue related to the screen saver.

Some more notes – you can get a list of IP addresses from https://ar-dns.net/xlx along with host names – for an active reflector with terminal mode support that is state side check out XLX102B – that one has support for G3 terminal mode.

Not sure what part of the world you are in or what time of day you try but keep in mind that reflector is in Romania. Perhaps try one of the other ones noted in my post above ?

Good news is I did every step as per your Instructions and It worked. But let me ask you all something that I do not want to assume, is the ip address 89.33.44.100 exclusive for the XLX227? Therefore For any other reflector I need to have its specific ip address?

Correct each IP is unique and has a unique name.domain.name – there are other XLX based reflectors coming online that support – there are more and more XLX based reflectors coming online with G3 Terminal mode support – look at the Reflector list from any one of them for a list and look for G3 terminal support – you should be able to enter the name.domain.name for the reflector or the IP address in the radio to connect up.

The entry has to be 8 characters long, so you may have to add spaces. For instance W4VM___H where the underlines are three spaces.

Hi there. I followed this to the letter but sadly every time I key the ptt I get a red cross next to the cloud 😦
I have tried everything I can think of, and read the advanced manual, followed other peoples set ups- essentially same as here – and no luck.
I’m open to any and all suggestions. Cheers.

The reflector sends every ten seconds a ping (on port 40000) to the 9700 in terminal mode, the 9700 never respond to this ping. That is why the reflector drops the connection after 1 hour. Unless you PTT, the hour resets.
(used wireshark to capture the UDP packets, IC-9700 FW 1.31)
This is easy to resolve by ICOM, : let the terminal respond to the ping, then you have your check,
that the terminal is still there.
It is very stupid even if you use your landline, to push the PTT every hour if you only listening, it can easy be solved.

David – great video, I got mine set up rather quickly. I used to use DSTAR often but have been out of the game for a few years. Once I get logged onto 227B I cannot figure out how to get to the other “rooms/reflectors” do I have to change the TO over to 227G or something different to get to C4FM or DMR? This is the part that is not clear for me here. I actually had a QSO with someone on 227B (that looks like a test reflector) but he was new also and didn’t know where to go from there.

Hi Brian – welcome back to fun and games. When you connect up to XLX227B that is the reflector and module you are on – each reflector has a unique IP address/host-name.domain-name and then modules a-z The module are what is transcoded – in the case of say XLX687A I know that module A has support for transcoding between D-Star, DMR and C4FM – so from your 9700 you would connect to it and then the reflector will transcode it back out to the DMR and C4FM – see this for a diagram – https://davidcappello.com/2020/10/11/experimental-xlx687-reflector-online/ As an example. With that said not all XLX reflectors have this support or feature or support terminal mode for that mater. Hope to catch you on the air sometime down the airwaves.

Thank you David, that is very much in alignment with what I was thinking. I just am not sure why there wasn’t more activity on 227. It may have been the time of day (night over there) but the dashboard looked like there was activity. I will try your reflector this evening and see what I can come up with.
